"Make us raise the bar for your kids."
DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg, to northwest parents at the September 2009 Denver Plan presentation at North High

Northwest Neighborhood Middle Schools NOW was formed in 2009 by parents who were in search of an academically strong neighborhood middle school option in Northwest Denver that was socioeconomically and culturally diverse. Currently many NOW members have children attending Skinner with great success.

NOW members worked with the leaders of the already strong Skinner Middle School to win a $500,000 grant that strengthened honors options, Spanish (beginning and advanced) and instrumental music programs. Dedicated leaders and talented staff paired with the strong commitment to academic growth and the full range of sports and academic offerings have made Skinner a school of choice in Northwest Denver.

We encourage all families that seek the well-rounded education of a neighborhood school to join our mailing list (below) to learn about Skinner's programs, success stories, and garner information about how to get involved.

Community Night Fun on May 5th

Come one, come all to Skinner's Annual Community Night on Thursday, May 5th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The night promises to be full of fun and surprises for kids and adults alike.

Kids are sure to enjoy fun activities like making origami, picture frames, key chains and bookmarks. Adults and kids alike can participate in the Chili Cook-Off, shop at the burrito/cupcake table, bake sale and garage sale or place bids in the silent auction to raise funds for the students traveling to Washington, D.C. in June.

Students will also have opportunities to look ahead, making future dorm room projects and exploring possible careers. Math games for all levels will challenge all comers, and Honors science students be recognized at a special booth.

"Last year over 200 neighborhood families came to Community Night," said Principal Nicole Veltze. "Adults and kids alike were really impressed with Skinner and our community. We got rave reviews!"

Hope to see you May 5th at 5:30 p.m. at Skinner!

Skinner Neighborhood Center Is An Amazing Place!

Did you know Skinner has an amazing Neighborhood Center that is a resource not only for students but for families, too?

The Neighborhood Center hosts a number of student activities, from student council to tutoring, but also features favorites like:
Computers: Students learn how to repair computers, refurbishing their own computer for them to take home after completion of the program.
Cinema: Students learn how to write a script, act, pre/post-produce, edit and direct a film that is showcased at a school film festival.
Creative Cooking/Cultures: Students explore cultures around the world through cooking, creating a recipe book to share.
Scorpion Splash: Students can participate in a recreational swim program with a lifeguard on duty.
Teen Tycoons: Students use critical thinking skills to explore entrepreneurial money making opportunities and develop sales products.

Adults are welcome at Skinner's Neighborhood Center, as well. All families can benefit from "Quick Fix Family Cooking," where the focus is on making quick, easy and inexpensive meals families can cook together. Beginning computers, English and literacy are also available, as is a resource room with support for resume writing, job searches, community health referrals and more.

Skinner is much more than just a school – it's a welcoming place where families can gather and learn.
